While the numbers involved in determining how many solar panels you need may be confusing, the process is actually quite simple. The number of solar panels needed to power a home is determined by multiplying the size of the system by its production ratio (PR). For example, if a homeowner wanted to power his entire home with an off-the-grid solar panel system and he chose a 10 kW system, then his PR would equal 0.1. Now, the next step would be to multiply 10 kW by 0.1. This gives us a result of 1 kWh per day that would be produced on average for every square foot of solar panels used.

Next, we will determine how much energy that homeowner’s house uses over a year. In most cases, this will be 1,000 kWh or more per month. To convert this amount from monthly to annual, simply multiply it by 12 – now we know that this homeowner’s house uses 12,000 kWh per year or 3.6 million joules.

Now that we have all the necessary data, we can solve for P by dividing 1 by our production ratio:

P = 1 / PR = 1 / 0.1 = 10

Will Solar Panels Be Required for New Home Constructions in St. Petersburg, Florida?

ADT Acquired Sun Pro

Software giant ADT has agreed to acquire Sunpro Solar, a rooftop solar company, for $160 million in cash, plus 77.8 million shares of ADT common stock. This data suggests an enterprise value of around $825 million, subject to various changes.


Sunpro will be rebranded as “ADT Solar” and will enter the rooftop solar industry in order to give ADT clients a safe, connected, and now powered home. Sunpro, which was founded in 2008, is a prominent provider of rooftop solar systems in the United States. Sunpro’s 3,600-person full-time team of solar energy specialists with 56 sites in 22 states promotes, develops, sells, installs and maintains solar power systems on residential and commercial premises.

Mitrex Introduces Solar Panels with a Maximum Power Output of 800W

Solar Energy Offsets 50% Off A Virginia School District's Electrical Usage

School districts stand to benefit from solar energy in many ways, including savings on utility bills and the opportunity to earn revenue through solar power purchase agreements. The Isle of Wight County Schools system has announced that it will now offset half of its annual electrical usage with a 3.3-MW solar system. This is accomplished with a combination of rooftop arrays at seven schools: Carrollton Elementary School, Carrsville Elementary School, GD Tyler Middle School, Smithfield Main, Windsor Elementary School, Windsor High School, and Windsor Annex. The combined 3.3-MW solar system is estimated to provide 4,252-MWh of sustainable energy each year.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released a study in September that found that with aggressive cost reductions, supportive policies, and large-scale electrification, solar could account for up to 40% of the nation’s electricity supply by 2035 and 45 percent by 2050. The report found that solar costs have come down substantially over the past decade and will continue to decline, driven by technology improvements and economies of scale as solar deployment continues to grow.
