Currently, there are 10 states that have started the process to pass a legislative bill that requires homes to have solar panels installed in their homes. The states are Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Currently, California is the only state exercising this mandate. Is there a possibility that Florida will follow in the footsteps of these states? Currently, there isn’t a state-wide mandate that requires homeowners in Jacksonville, Florida to install solar panels. 

But even though there isn’t a mandate that states this bill, Florida is well on the road to becoming the state that exercises this practice. In 2017, South Miami became the first city outside of California to require all new homes to install solar panels on their roofs. This became great news for Florida residents and their intention moving forward to align with the Solar industry. Of course, other factors play a role if your home is even qualified for solar panels but the way the technology has been rapidly evolving, it’s safe to say that in the coming years, a mandatory law will pass where new homes in the Tampa area, let alone the state of Florida, will be required to install solar panels.

What’s The Future for Solar?

There is a study that was released on September 8, 2021 by the US Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), finds that with aggressive cost reductions, supportive policies, and large-scale electrification, solar could account for up to 40% of the nation’s electricity supply by 2035 and 45 percent by 2050. If we are, generally speaking, solar is a good investment in Florida. Generous power buy-back rates, the Florida state sales tax exemption, the property tax exemption, and the Federal Solar Tax Rebate all combine to provide an appealing solar payback time of 11 years on average, making solar well-worth the investment in Florida.
